The three-part OAV Super Robot Wars: The Original Generation (2005) was the first attempt to adapt the popular video game to animation: the broadcast series Super Robot Wars: OG - Divine Wars followed a year later. The Earth Federation relies on the mecha suits called Personal Troopers (or PTs) for its defense. But the unveiling ceremony for the Bartoll, the latest model from Wong Heavy Industries, turns into an attack by hordes of Bartoll. Only a small cadre of ace pilots can protect the planet from the insidious scheme of scientist Wilhelm von Jürgen. The complicated mecha battles in Super Robot Wars will please fans of the game, but the minimal story doesn't make much sense and the characters remain underdeveloped. A booklet and a DVD of extras can help sort things out, but no one would guess that Kuro and Shiro, the talking cats who accompany pilot Masaki Ando, "were both made from Masaki's subconscious." Director Jun Kawagoe's nervous camera work and choppy editing make it hard to follow the mecha battles on Earth and in space. In Japanese only.
